Light vs Dark Beer

Lots of people ask the question “Is there a difference between light and dark beer?” The answer is, there is a big difference between the two. Light beers are those that are light in color. These have a clear amber look to them, such as Budweiser, Miller, and Corona, have a lighter flavor to them, and some people say no flavor. Darker beets such as Guinness and Micro Brewery beers have a tan to dark brown coloring to them and have very strong distinct flavors to them.

Light Beers

Light beer is one of the most popular and best selling beer in America. Over 46% of all beer sold are light beer. One in five of all beers sold is a Bud Light. Why is light beer so popular? One of the reasons is price. Light beer is often the cheapest of all the different types of beers. This is due to its mass production and simple brewing process. Light beer ironically can be heavier than dark beer. This is due to the fact that light beer often has less alcohol, which is lighter than water. Beers such as Bud Light, Miller Lite, and Coors Light have less alcohol than their regular draft cuisines, and often times times if you are drinking to get drunk drinking light beer can give you more calories than regular. This is due to the fact you need to drink more light beer to get the effect of regular, and light beer is about 40 calories less than regular (110 over 150). Whereas getting buzzed light beer is the way to go.

Dark Beers

Dark beers, Stouts, Porters, Scotch Ales and so on, are easy to identify as they have the tan to dark brown coloring. The foam that forms when poured is also often thicker than lighter colored beers. Dark beers get their coloring from the roasting of the barley or hops used. The longer they are roasted, the darker the color of the beer. This process is also what gives dark beer its flavor. Dark beers are also the style that most craft beers are. This also allows dark beers to be flavored in a multitude of ways with combinations of ingredients added to the brewing process, and flavors added after.
